So You want to Know what ‘Missional’ is…

Well JR Woodward has prepared an amazingly comprehensive list of resources that cover the concept of ‘missional’ from top to bottom from a great diverse group of commentators unified by their desire to ask hard missiological questions about what the church should be doing in the world today.

On the one hand, “missional” is a more “organic” term than missions. Missional refers to “the church’s very nature” (Roxburgh and Romanuk). Having said this, in my experience, the term “missional” tends to be closely tied to a postliberal hermeneutic, or postmillenial eschatology (however one would prefer to put it), e.g. Guder, Hunsberger, Roxburgh, and so on. In a sense, therefore, it is a “branded term”, not a term which one can freely use as a universal one.

I guess the way in which the term would be understood depends partly upon how any specific practitioner understands God’s mission in this world. Hence those with a more post-millenial understanding of God’s mission will end up with a more post-millenial brand of missional.
