Missional Church: What We’ve Missed #1

Since I decided to rant about the ‘non-missional’ church in one of my previous posts I decided that I should spend some time talking through some of the positive elements of the Missional church with one eye on how these elements are being ‘missed’ in many ‘middle-of-the-road’ churches (MRC’s).

I don’t want to use the term ‘traditional church’ or ‘evangelical church’ because I think there are missional churches that are evangelical and that contain elements of and a healthy connection to tradition (I would like to argue, from a personal point of view that all missional churches should be evangelical – and hopefully that will come out in this series). So instead I’ve opted for the term ‘middle-of-the-road’ church or MRC to describe churches that are Christian, generally gospel-believing churches, but churches that are not exercising their gospel convictions by actively proclaiming the gospel in numerous contexts and outworking the entailments of the gospel in numerous contexts – I’m sure we all know churches like that, there’s a pretty good chance we’re in a church like that now. This then is a series that aims to find out what we’ve missed with regard to being missional.

One more disclaimer: This is not going to be an exhaustive commentary on ‘being missional’, if you want that then look here. My attempt rather is just to point some particular elements that are of interest to me.

Stay tuned…
